ABSTRACT
The purpose of this article is to document the trend in studies on the role of the father. A large number of studies on parent-child relationships have been focused on the nature of mother-child relationships. Since the 1970s, the role of the father has become an increasingly popular topic in the U.S and Japan. Why has the father's role been forgotten for such a long timeulcorner Why is the father's role being rediscovered in recent yearsulcorner Does the father have significant impact on child's developmentulcorner This proper reviews these issues in terms of sociocultural background, trends, and future implications of the studies. A comparison and determinants analysis regarding the extent of father-child interaction, of the lather's behavior, and its effects on the child in the U.S and Japan is provided.
